Turn Google into your own personal (free) Napster

Google is good for so many things, among which is searching for all sorts of files, including MP3's. Here's a quick primer:

-inurl:(htm|html|php) intitle:"index of" +"last modified" +"parent directory" +description +size +(wma|mp3) "Nirvana"

Just substitute the term "Nirvana" for any band or singer you might be looking for, and your search will lead you to open indexes that contain downloadable music files.

Benq Siemens Black Box Concept

BenQ is still making phones in Asia, just no longer in the German market. This is one of the concept phones being worked on—the Black Box.

No keypads, no buttons, just a big ass touchscreen. From the initial pictures it looks like the interface changes on the fly.

I'm digging the black minimalist design overall. It will probably never see the light of day as an actual product, but it is still cool to look at, nonetheless. – Travis Hudson

Nokia AEON: another concept with the touchscreen control

Nokia has posted the image of another mobile phone concept called Nokia AEON. Looking at the photos we guess that the model is peculiar for its front panel, which is almost sensor.

The interface of the concept is similar to another concept BenQ-Siemens Black Box, which displays control elements and menu depending on the current function. In any case the model looks very attractive.

Samsung world's first 10 megapixel camera phone

South Korea's Samsung Electronics has started selling what it claims is the world's first 10 megapixel multimedia phone that offers crisp video and top-notch digital camera functions.

"Samsung reinforces its technology leadership by launching the world's first 10 megapixel mobile phone ... in the Korean market," the company said in a statement.

The newest addition to its line of multimedia phones is six millimetres (0.24 inches) thinner and 10 grams (0.35 ounces) lighter than the existing seven megapixel camera handset.

It sets itself apart from its previous megapixel camera phones by combining mobile TV capability at satellite standard, the company said.
It also offers the same level of picture-taking sophistication that a top-notch megapixel digital camera offers.
The front is designed as a bar-type mobile phone, while the back comes with a design reminiscent of a real digital camera.

It will sell for around 900,000 won (937 dollars) in the South Korean market.

Google Code Search

Code search is a great resource for web developers and programmers, but like the making available of all previously unsearched bodies of information, it's given lots of flashlights to people interested in exploring dark corners.

TDK unveils 16.5GB mini Blu-ray discs at CEATEC

If you think those 50GB Blu-ray blanks are asking a bit much from the ole wallet, and haven't found a Blu-ray burner without all sorts of issues to begin with, TDK is moving forward anyway with its latest twist on Blu-ray technology.

It's only fitting that the same folks bringing us the 200GB variety have announced their plans to drop a smaller, more compact version, and that's precisely what happened at today's CEATEC festivities.

The 8-centimeter recordable disc handles 16.5GB on a single layer, and is being designed for next generation camcorders, such as the ones Hitachi's been showing off at the same show. Although nothing definitive has been said, the groundwork has apparently been laid for a dual-layer variety (that's 33GB for those still counting) to hit shelves in the even-more-distant future.

Philips Simplicity Event 2006 shows off conceptual shiny toys

Philips showed off its latest free-thinking ideas for its annual 'concepts' show at the ExCel Centre in London's docklands this week.

The venue changes every year, and so do the ideas in Philips' design labs, which can vary from the outlandish to the comparatively mundane.

From the fancy future stuff there was there few designs caught my eyes:

*Drag Draw A light-emitting 'pen' that can draw on any surface, including walls. A computer programme can also be used to animate the pics that have been drawn, and they can be 'erased' with the click of a button.

*Versa Tiles Like a Simon Says game that encourages kids to jump about rather than stare at a computer screen.

*In-form health monitor A device that records weight, body fat ratio, hydration levels body shape measurements etc, feeds them into a computer that doubles as a bathroom mirror and outlines your health regime for the day - everything from how much exercise to take to what you should eat.

Nokia introduces a new radio technology – Wibree

Nokia Research Center celebrated yesterday its 20th anniversary. In addition to the event Nokia has introduced Wibree wireless technology. Wibree technology complements close range communication with Bluetooth like performance within 10 m range and data rate of 1 Mbps.

Wibree isn’t considered to be the direct competitor of Bluetooth. It is optimized for applications requiring extremely low power consumption, small size and low cost. Wibree is the first open technology offering connectivity between mobile devices or PC, and small, button cell battery power devices such as watches, wireless keyboards, toys and sports sensors.
The new standard is easily integrated with Bluetooth. Wibree is implemented either as stand-alone chip or as Bluetooth-Wibree dual-mode chip. The small devices like watches and sports sensors will be based on stand-alone chip whereas Bluetooth devices will take benefit of the dual-mode solution.

The specifications of Wibree are developed by Nokia in cooperation with several large chip makers. The first commercial version is expected to be introduced in 2Q 2007, and the first shipments of chips will start during 2Q 2007.

Fujitsu's Turn Table PC and Ultra Mobile debut at CEATEC

Fujitsu was starting to feel a little left out of all the CEATEC fun, what with its rivals demoing products left and right at the major Japanese expo going on this week in Chiba, just outside Tokyo.
We came across some snaps of what appears to be two concept devices, the "Turn Table PC," and the "Ultra Mobile," a slick-looking media player.

The Turn Table PC looks like it has a strange-looking lid along with a touch-sensitive backlit keyboard, which could mean that those filthy keyboard days are over. (However, these types of keyboards seem unlikely to take off, given that there's hardly any tactile feedback.) In addition, the Ultra Mobile seems to have a twistable case, revealing a mic and webcam, and at least a few USB ports on the left side.

Unfortunately details about these new products are on the sparse side, but we do hope that the Turn Table PC (peep it on the next page) has the option of being able to spin records so we can get our b-boy on.

Nike and Apple team up

THE NIKE + iPod Sport Kit($29 direct) is just what the tech-loving runner has been waiting for.
It consists of a small plastic 2.4-GHz adapter for the Apple iPod nano (other iPod models aren’t supported) and a sensor that you put in your shoe. The sensor captures waveform data as you walk or run and transmits it to your iPod, where it is translated into distance travelled, speed, calories burned, and time elapsed. The sensor is designed for Nike’s new line of running shoes, which have a pocket for it in the left insole, but it works fine with any shoes.

You get voice feedback on your stats during your run, and you can choose a PowerSong that gives you a pick-me-up when you’re running out of gas. Each time you achieve a new personal best (such as longest distance), voices of celebrity athletes such as Lance Armstrong congratulate you. You can also sync your workout data at the Nike + Web site (nikeplus.com), where you can view your own stats as well as those of other Nike + iPod users. The site’s community and statistical features are amazing—not to mention motivating.

PROS: Fun to use. Easy to set up. Excellent community features.

CONS: Works only with the nano. iPod’s Select button can be difficult to find by feel, so either buy a Nike+ Sport Armband or get an adhesive felt patch for the button.
